The TerraNova Story

The TerraNova Promise

Nature's Best Body Care

Their name, TerraNova, means "New Earth" and represents their dedication to using nature's bounty as the basis of our products. TerraNova creates honest, biodegradable formulations made with premium botanicals, vegetable oils, and vitamins. Their preservatives are carefully chosen to insure the safety of our products and they never test on animals.

TerraNova is owned and operated by Jane Saunders and her daughters, Ann and Kathy.

In 1970, inspired by Berkeley 's "counterculture," Jane Saunders began creating alternative bath and body care products to reflect the emerging interest in natural ingredients and environmental concerns. The idea was simple: Jane wanted to make products that embodied her political and social values - using only pure, natural, and biodegradable ingredients. Instead of wasteful packaging, she offered customers bottles which they could return for refilling or recycling.

Together with her sister-in-law and their pooled savings of $750, Jane went into business. The Body Shop (named in homage to the building's original use), made 16 tons of soap that first year, custom cut into bars, with fragrances like Strawberry Yogurt, Cucumber and Chocolate. The store offered body lotions, creams, shampoos and conditioners, custom-scented with essential oils. The Body Shop was an immediate hit with Berkeley residents and within two years, had grown to six retail stores in the Bay Area (now owned by Jane's niece), and a national wholesale business.

In 1979, Jane and her sister-in-law split the business; Jane and her daughters assumed ownership of the wholesale division; the retail stores would be operated separately by their former partner. In 1988, The Body Shop trademark was purchased by a British company of the same name that sought to enter the United States market.

It was always most important for the product to be fun and good - really good. We wanted it to be something our customers could use, not just buy," explains Jane. "I didn't want to create a product that cost a lot and didn't do anything." Thus her marketing and product philosophy were born. Happily, her principles have stood the test of time.

The body care business has changed a lot since 1970, but the Saunders' business philosophy hasn't. From the beginning, Jane chose not to compete with large, mainstream companies that spend as much to launch a new fragrance as she bills in a year. "Our goals have always been simple. We wanted to make a good product, which we learned to do by listening to our customers. We wanted to be mindful of the earth and its resources, which we are. And we wanted to enjoy our work. That seems more than enough to us," Jane explains.

Customers concur. One store owner explains his loyalty this way: "I depend on TerraNova to provide first-rate products that are natural, healthy, biodegradable and fun! Their fragrances are clean, fresh, and wearable."

Other long-time customers single out TerraNova for their innovative formulations.

Jane explains TerraNova's success simply: "Thirty-three years ago, people were just beginning to be interested in natural products. Today, hundreds of retailers sell our products to customers who like TerraNova's formulations because they appeal to both the senses and the mind. As people become more educated about caring for their skin and for the earth, we are there for them with a full line of natural, healthy alternatives. We continue to operate on the principle that simpler is better".
